Charles E. Berger, age 95 of Eau Claire, died Thursday July 26, 2012 at the Clairemont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born November 2, 1916 in the town of Lima, Pepin County, to John and Lucy (Bauer) Berger. Charles served in the U. S. Army with the 18th Combat Engineers from Dec.13, 1941 to Sept. 25, 1945. He worked for 9 months on the ALCAN highway in Canada, with a carpenter rating. After the service, Charles married Lucy Brantner on May 14, 1947 in Mondovi. Charles worked as a carpenter for several contractors around the Eau Claire area, including Gorton Brothers, Walker Construction and J.F. Olson. In 1951 he went to work for Market & Johnson where he retired from in 1978 with 27 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 154 in Mondovi.

Charles loved to fish, play cards and take an occasional trip to a casino. He enjoyed pickling and smoking fish and reminiscing about his younger days in the army and on the farm.

Survivors include five children; Sister Sharon Berger, of La Crosse, WI, Ronald (Diane) Berger, Deborah (Bruce) Jenson, and Tim Berger of Eau Claire, Kathy (Robert) Luty of Hudson and a daughter-in-law Karen Berger of Charlotte NC.; 10 grandchildren, Erica Manousos, Laura Berger, Angela Koehler, Nicholas Berger, Shannon Phillips, Ryan Luty, Timothy Radke, Sarah Haider, Daniel Berger and Jamie Berger,; 5 great-grandchildren, Brett Radke, Brook Radke, Owen Phillips, Evan Phillips and Eva Manousos,; 1 brother, Bill (Ella) Berger of Racine, WI, 2 sisters, Virginia (Jerry) Rehberg and Adella Watts of Eau Claire, a sister-in-law Noreen Berger of Mondovi.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lucy; his son Ken; 4 brothers, Vincent, Leonard, Johnny and Bernard Berger; 3 sisters, Helen Endle, Emma Dekan and Celia Berger.

Memorial service will be held at 3pm Sunday July 29, 2012 at Fuller Speckien Hulke Funeral Home with Father Eugene Klink officiating. Visitation will take place at the funeral home Sunday 2 hours prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Rock Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be given to a local charity in Charles name.
